QTLS/ATLS - Statutory Requirements

A new suit of teacher training qualifications are a statutory requirement for those teaching in the lifelong learning sector. For the first time, the statutory requirements link qualification type to job role not to the number of hours taught; hence a very part-time teacher may be expected to gain the same qualification as those who are full-time if they carry out the full teaching role. These new qualifications lead to Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) or Associate Teacher Learning and Skills (ATLS) and a 'licence to practise'. Teachers must register with the Institute for Learning (IfL), the professional body for the sector. To maintain this, there is a requirement for full-time teachers (pro-rata for part-time staff) to undertake 30 hours of continuing professional development (CPD) per year, which brings the sector into line with English school teacher requirements.

LONCETT's QTLS/ATLS Project aims to support organisations in implementing these new requirements by locating exemplar practice as well as by reporting on appropriate procedures and materials for recruitment, induction and CPD.
