Continuing Professional Development

In December 2006 LLUK published the New Overarching Professional Standards which represented a first step towards the construction of a new framework of qualifications for teachers in the lifelong learning sector. As part of these reforms all teachers within the sector are expected to register with the Institute for Learning (IfL) and to complete at least 30 hours of continuing professional development (CPD) each year (pro-rata for part-time teachers), maintaining a record of CPD activities undertaken.

The IfL is the professional body for teachers, trainers and assessors across further education and its work is driven by a commitment to promote, value and develop the professionalism of members. A key priority is to support individual teachers' and trainers' learning so that they can maintain their high professional status and have long-term continuing professional development (CPD) interests as career teachers. See the IfL website for further details.

LONCETT's lead partner, the Institute of Education, University of London, has developed a new and exciting programme of professional development opportunities for teachers, lecturers and managers working in the further education and lifelong learning sector.

There are a number of courses from Foundation Degree to Doctorate levels aimed at supporting professionals to reflect on their practice, develop new skills and familiarise themselves with recent research knowledge in the field.

These courses can count towards the annual 30 hours of CPD required to maintain membership of the Institute of Learning.  Those enrolling will receive certificates of attendance.

Full details of these courses are available from the IOE's website which also contains a PDF of the CPD brochure for downloading.
